The Role

Assistant Directors in Water Divison policy undertake work that is complex in nature, work under limited direction with reasonable autonomy and accountability.

You will exercise both initiative and judgment in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures. You will provide detailed technical, professional, and/or policy advice in relation to complex problems and assist in strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.

These roles may have a considerable level of public contact in relation to difficult or sensitive issues and may liaise with a range of stakeholders in a representational capacity. Work may involve management responsibilities requiring the setting of priorities and managing workflows.

The Ideal Person

The successful candidates will have the following:

• Demonstrated policy development experience
• high level analytical and research skills, including the ability to think objectively and review data.
• The ability to negotiate outcomes and deliver high quality written policy advice on complex and sensitive issues to diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a high performing and inclusive team by setting clear direction, providing a positive work environment, regular feedback and coaching, and building capability.
• A commitment to continuous improvement, working in new ways and a demonstrated ability to lead, implement and respond positively to change.

Qualifications and/or experience in the following is highly desired, but not mandatory:

• Water resource policy and/or water resource management.
• Knowledge of Commonwealth and/or state water legislation.
