As stewards of our fisheries and marine environment taonga Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) undertakes important work to ensure the sustainability of our wild fish stocks, aquaculture operations as part of the broader marine ecosystems, now and in the future. Our vision is that New Zealand will be the world's most sustainable provider of high-value fisheries and aquaculture products. We are experiencing an exciting time of innovation and improvement in the sector and have a busy pipeline of important work including Fisheries System Reform, Revitalising the Hauraki Gulf, Strengthening Fishing Rules and Policies, Ensuring Healthy Ocean Ecosystems, and the implementation of On-Board cameras to name a few.

We are looking for two Economic Analysts to join our growing Economics team and work on a variety of projects to develop economic analytical capacity and support meaningful enhancements to the impact of FNZ decisions. You will work to ensure FNZ has access to expert independent economic advice and considering broad impacts when making decisions and developing policy, through providing advice from the team and managing external supplier arrangements as needed. You will contribute to the design and delivery of innovative data solutions, to strengthen decision-making practices, in this rapidly evolving technical environment. We are looking for complementary skills ranging from strong, in-depth data analytics to economic management/policy analytical skills.

To deliver in this role you will:

  • Complete project work and initiatives to support FNZ work programme
  • Develop in-house economic analysis and provide advice
  • Establish relationships, networks, and a strong platform for cross-Directorate communication
  • Identify and address risks and emerging issues that impact strategic and operational priorities
  • Offer well-informed insights through data and analytics
  • Design and develop processes, to meet the evolving socio-economic information needs.

You love analytics and see how your work contributes to a bigger picture. Collaborating with passionate subject-matter experts and leaders, informing and advising through data is key in this role. You will be inquisitive and curious to understand our organisation and the opportunities to progress strategic priorities and support operational realities.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Strong ability to collaborate – you will work inside, outside, across, up and down FNZ
  • Previous experience using analytical methods and techniques
  • Drive for results and comfort in taking initiative to achieve outcomes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong writing skills
  • Understanding of the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi

Ideal but not essential:

  • Previous experience as an Economist, or with economic analysis in an equivalent role
  • Experience providing advice that shapes strategy and policy.
