About the team

 

The Legal, Privacy and Internal Audit branch is within the Corporate Services division providing strategies, solutions and services that make our clients’ working lives easier and their projects more efficient and effective. Our high-performing legal teams work collaboratively across the organisation, partnering to provide critical legal advice and guidance for sensitive, complex, and legal regulatory matters.

 

 

The opportunity

 

With the goal of delivering ever greater public value for the people of NSW, our Legal branch is undergoing an organisational transformation in response to an unprecedented level of activity with a view to streamlining processes, enhancing the breadth and depth of our internal specialist skill set and investing in our legal operational and practice management capabilities to drive efficiencies.

 

As a result of significant transformation and growth we are recruiting a Director Legal, Construction and Major Projects, with specialist expertise in dispute resolution across major construction and infrastructure projects.

 

Reporting to the Executive Director Legal – Construction and Major Projects, you will be a senior trusted legal advisor responsible for providing solutions focussed independent advice on construction and projects matters to support the achievement of organisational outcomes, minimise legal risk and deliver on our commitment to our customers, the people of NSW.

 

The Director Legal – Construction and Major Projects will deliver complex, high quality, high value, timely and solutions-focused legal services, and independent advice as well as supervising a small number of lawyers through empowering leadership. 

 

Other key accountabilities include:

 

Providing leadership and expert legal advice to the Secretary and Senior Executives, and leading complex legal negotiations to facilitate the management and resolution of a diverse range of project, operational, legislative, and other legal matters

 

Taking a leading role in client teams, identifying legal risks, providing solution oriented legal advice, and drafting and contributing as a senior team member to coordinate and influence outcomes that align to organisational and commercial objectives and parameters ensuring that strategic legal risks are escalated

 

In dispute resolution, devising and executing a planned dispute resolution strategy when representing the Transport cluster in complex negotiations and proceedings

 

Assessing and responding to the impact of changes in the operating environment on relevant legislation, legal, policy and regulatory frameworks to ensure a high level of integration with the broader context

 

Building the operational and technical capability of lawyers reporting to you by empowering their development through diverse opportunities supported by appropriate supervision and coaching to ensure skill development

About you

 

You will be a specialist legal executive with proven expertise as a construction / infrastructure lawyer (back end) advising on challenging issues within an in-house legal function of a large, complex organisation or in private practice providing strategic level advice across a diverse client base including public sector / government

 

You will have proven expertise in disputes, including complex and contentious matters within a major projects environment and advising and managing small to large scale claims and disputes

 

You will be capable of working with a high degree of autonomy and possess strong business acumen, analytical skills, and the ability to make sound commercial decisions within a legal context

 

You will have exceptional stakeholder management skills and be accustomed to working with senior stakeholders at the Executive level

 

You will have strong communication and influencing skills, able to provide timely and considered advice such that you will inspire confidence in your clients and develop trusted and effective working relationships

 

You will possess a minimum of five years relevant legal experience and be eligible to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate

 

Most importantly, you model the highest standards of integrity and professional conduct and are passionate about contributing to the future of NSW
