Job Description

About us

Transport for NSW keeps our State moving by providing safe, integrated and efficient transport systems. We put our customers at the centre of everything we do – and we do a lot. We connect people, communities and industry and manage how they use our road, rail and maritime networks and services, and even active modes like walking and cycling. The work we do connects the journeys you take every day.

We are a state government organisation made up of more than 28,000 people and we're in the middle of delivering the largest transport infrastructure program in Australia's history. We work across planning, policy and procurement, harnessing data and technology to develop smarter and more adaptive transport solutions.

That means job opportunities in metropolitan and regional areas right across NSW – you have the chance to be part of creating a lasting legacy that will benefit generations to come.

About the Team

The Regional and Outer Metropolitan (ROM) division is focused on understanding the particular needs of regional communities across NSW and delivering customer-centred integrated transport services and infrastructure.

The Opportunity

The Data Engineer plays a key role in the Customer Insights Team to assist in the maintenance, improvement, cleaning, and manipulation of data from divisional and other databases. The role will land data relating to our customers from various sources like Facebook, Twitter and Salesforce, into a data lake which is then used to produce customer centric measures and insights into what are customers are saying and thinking about TFNSW products and services.

It is an exciting opportunity to join a new team in a Greenfields space. You will need to be constantly scanning the horizon for the evolving cloud technology landscape and adapting existing skillsets to new approaches.

Some of the keys responsibilities of the role include:

Create and maintain the implementation of optimal data pipelines from a wide variety of internal and external sources into a large cloud environment.

Work with genuinely large datasets and implement against reference designs to meet the functional requirements of the cluster, branch and consumers.

Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, streamlining data delivery and re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability and elegance.

Build and support the infrastructure as code required for the ELT (extract, load, transform) of data into a data lake including SQL and a range of native ‘big data’ cloud technologies.

Keep the virtualised separation of cloud environments and play a strong role in contributing to protecting the data inside a secured perimeter.

Create of data tools and scripts for Analytics, Business Intelligence and Data Science teams to assist in building highly optimised products ready for a production environment.

Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement

About you

You are an energetic and determined individual who enjoys delivering exceptional customer experiences in a constantly changing environment. You are a reliable team player ready for challenging work and able to build rapport, work collaboratively and develop strong relationships.

Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate complex solutions clearly to team members and stakeholders is essential.

You will have experience with supporting native cloud data solutions, including AWS and Azure and also be familiar with the Office 365 suite and software-as-a-service, including Power BI, Power Automate and Power Apps.

You’ll be inspired by the opportunity to make regional NSW a better place to live, work and enjoy. To support this, we have offices at a number of locations in the area and encourage people regionally based in New South Wales to apply as we have flexible working arrangements available.
