Job Description
Position Summary:
This is a CAREER PATH from a Customer Service Ambassador to Locomotive Engineer. With an exceptional safety, attendance, compliance, and conduct record, Customer Service Ambassadors have the opportunity to progress into the role of Locomotive Engineer.
Employee will be required to:
- Work shifts that cover 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at all locations of the GO Transit rail network (Greater Toronto Hamilton Area). Exceptional punctuality and attendance is a requirement.
- Work distraction free, without personal electronic communication or entertainment devices (phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches, etc.) for up 12 hours
- Maintain a Valid “G†class driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle
- Complete and maintain safety critical medical exams that include vision, hearing, and drug and alcohol screening
Locomotive Engineer Duties:
- Oversee safe movement of trains
- Comply with signals and operating instructions, railroad rules and regulations
- Monitor speed, brake and other gauges to ensure safe and ontime train operations
- Receive and transmit instructions by radio
- Sit, stand, climb, manipulate equipment and switches as required
- Perform mechanical predeparture inspections
- Walk on uneven surfaces around moving equipment and mainline train traffic
Customer Service Ambassador Duties:
The Customer Service Ambassador is the onboard face and voice of GO Transit to their rail commuters, thus an ideal candidate for this position must exhibit the following abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to perform report writing, radio communication, and public address announcements to inform passengers of station stops, delays, and special communications.
- Able to attend to difficult situations as a first responder, including medical emergencies, disturbances, onboard incidents, and crowd management.
- Able to attend to, communicate, and resolve onboard equipment malfunctions.
- Able to demonstrate care, compassion, and support to passengers with accessible needs, including physically deploying a bridge plate for leveled boarding.
- Prioritize tasks in a fast operational environment and maintain a safety consciousness, focus, and concentration in a crowded and noisy workspace for long periods of time.
- Able to follow written instructions and operate the train doors safely, ensuring personal and passenger wellbeing.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy, and teamwork.
- High level of integrity – able to work without continual supervision and prepared for frequent unannounced compliance tests and audits.
Locomotive Engineer Qualifications:
- Exception performance in the Customer Service Ambassador and Conductor roles.
- Secondary School Diploma
- Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in a safety related environment
- High levels of focus, experience operating machinery, long distance driving, able to communicate clearly and effectively with passengers, train crew members, rail operations, local authorities using a radio or public address system, written comprehension skills, ability to multitask under high stress situations
Customer Service Ambassador Qualifications:
- Secondary School Diploma
- Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in a safety related environment
- High levels of focus, experience operating machinery, long distance driving, able to communicate clearly and effectively with passengers, train crew members, rail operations, local authorities using a radio or public address system, written comprehension skills, ability to multitask under high stress situations
