About the role

Our Custody Unit team are seeking motivated individuals to work in the Court Custody Unit based in Hamilton.

The role of a Custody Officer within NZ Police is pivotal, and Custody Officers are responsible for providing care for detainees whilst they are in our custody and during transit. Other duties may include guarding scenes, court escort, custody assistance & prisoner management. This position provides operational and administrative support which includes (but is not limited to) file management.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Resilience, perseverance with the ability to de-escalate situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Strong attention to detail. Accurate and precise, the ability to record and prepare information such as statements for court.
  • Duty of care, understanding the welfare, health, safety and level of care required for detainees.
  • Strong team player, reliable, trustworthy.
  • Decisive, cool, calm and collected, you can think on your feet, using your initiative and work well under pressure.
  • Good computer skills are comfortable learning new systems, you will be required to input and update data accurately in Police systems, accurate typing abilities essential.
  • High level of health and fitness.
  • The ability to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.

Minimum requirements:

  • Full (clean) NZ Driver’s License with the ability to drive automatic and manual vehicles. (Class 2 license is an advantage).
  • New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Residency.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test and health checks.
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Strong level of fitness – you will be required to meet the standards of our Physical Assessment.
  • Attend and qualify Authorised Officer Training (3 weeks – dates to be confirmed)
