Job Description

Crop Scientist Client information: An exciting Agri-tech start-up, specialising in crop modelling. This is specifically data source agnostics, utilising a number of technological devices for imagery resourcing, including satellites, smart phones, drones and more. From this technology, fields are mapped, and the potential yield is determined. Farmers are given actionable intelligence on what is happening in their fields, and the reasons why. This includes early on-set identification of disease, the level of severity, the effect of different chemical inputs, and more Areas for improvement are identified, including plants that require chemical or resource inputs, including fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, invasive species and more. Currently a small team with the scope to scale-up due to consistent investment from the Oxford Sciences Enterprises Fund. Previous revenue targets for 2021 were exceeded by 70%, highlighting the company’s potential to grow. Team at present is largely geophysicists and full-stack developers. Due to this, they are looking for someone with a PhD and great knowledge of UK crops to advise the team on best causes for action once issues such as disease have been identified within crop fields. 

Unfortunately, at this time, the client is unable to sponsor, and candidates will need to have full UK rights to work. Experience that you need: PhD in a relevant subject, such as crop disease, crop science, arable farming, or specific crop species/ailments/inputs. Cereal grains, grasses or common UK crop weeds/ailments would be preferable. Experience in coding and statistics – A deep understanding of statics, with experience in Generalized Estimation Equations (CEE), Python, or JavaScript. Additional statistical programs would also be of interest. Coding skills would be advantageous but are not essential. It would be desirable for the ideal candidate to have a proven track record of working within crop diagnostics, crop/plant mapping, or working within the crop science sector. Field Experience working as part of a team, being comfortable to work fully remote. It would be desirable for the ideal candidate to be confident in their ability to ultimately grow a team of crop scientists. Experience with field walking, understanding of how farms work, or previous agronomy experience would also be preferable. Salary and Benefits:Salary is dependant on experience. All post-PhD skillsets considered. There is the opportunity for equity, and discretionary benefits are given.Start Date and Location:Looking for a candidate to start latest at the beginning of June. However, the client is prepared to wait for the perfect candidate.The role is fully remote, so all candidates from the UK will be considered.
