Department Overview

The Legal Counsel team is dedicated to providing legal advice and counsel to areas including corporate development, corporate lawyers, external counsel, intellectual property and litigation. Our dynamic professionals ensure compliance with the legal requirements for the Bank as a cross-border public company while providing legal advice to the business activities of TD Bank Group. Job Description

As Counsel I, you will provide thought leadership in legal advice and support to employees and management across the organization. You will act as a legal expert in handling assigned projects and day to day responsibilities such as:

Provide consistent and sound advice, clearly and concisely communicating legal issues and options to business partners while handling special projects

Develop an understanding of business partners' business needs and concerns by asking clear and appropriate follow-up questions, and providing direct feedback and answers

Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and negotiate business solutions in consideration of broader enterprise implications

Solve complex problems that require analysis of multiple variables, including consultation with multiple stakeholders

Interpret guidelines, standards, policies and analyse to inform decision making at senior levels

Build stakeholder alignment in leading projects and activities while providing process and subject matter advice at senior levels

Identify risks and counsel business partners on potential implications, escalate non-standard, high risk activities as necessary; act as an escalation point and be accountable for own work

Recommend opportunities to enhance productivity, effectiveness and operational efficiency; keep others informed and stay abreast of emerging trends, practices and procedures

Conduct internal and external research projects; support the development and delivery of communications to management or broader audience

Contribute to various operational activities and processes; assist in the preparation and maintenance of corporate records

Participate fully as a member of the team, promote team effectiveness and contribute to a positive work environment

Job Requirements

Undergraduate degree and/or relevant professional certifications, designations, or equivalent (JD/LLB) with 1 year of relevant experience with in-depth expertise in own domain and working knowledge of broader related areas

Good understanding of the industry, competition and the factors that differentiate the organization

Strong analytical skills to exercise discretion in managing correspondence, information and all matters of confidentiality

Proficient to use advanced methods to contribute to new solutions and recommend standards against which others will operate

Strong communications skills to the business and understand objections or positions and translate insights into legal recommendations
