The Position:
We are looking for a Corporate Compliance and Privacy leader with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in a senior compliance, privacy, or related role in a complex industry. The Corporate Compliance and Privacy leader is the senior compliance officer of Air Canada having overall responsibility for leading and integrating the legal and regulatory compliance infrastructure and program across Air Canada and its subsidiaries. Air Canada’s compliance team includes a General Compliance Officer, a Principal Privacy Officer and other team members accountable for these functions and leading this team will be an integral part of the role. The successful candidate will report to the Chief Legal Officer with an additional reporting line to the Audit Committee of the Board; they will work in collaboration with the operational leaders, with substantive support from the Legal, IT, business processes, internal audit, and other teams.
Core Responsibilities:
The Corporate Compliance and Privacy leader is the compliance leader responsible for, developing, implementing, supporting, and monitoring Air Canada’s compliance programme. Their core responsibilities will include:
- identifying and assessing compliance priorities facing Air Canada, and establishing cohesive action plans to address them within a risk management, operational and governance framework,
- assessing the organisation’s current compliance capability, organisation, and resources,
- collaborating closely with business partners and operational leaders to develop recommendations for improving the effectiveness of Air Canada’s compliance programs,
- monitoring compliance by the organisation’s branches and business functions within legal, regulatory, contractual, ethical and policy obligations and standards, and promoting accountability for their respective functions and areas of responsibility,
- driving periodic assessment and planning processes for each branch and business function including risk assessment, monitoring, surveillance/testing, and the assessment of the prioritisation and sufficiency of training and resources,
- communicating to promote and reinforce employee awareness of and engagement with their compliance and integrity obligations,
- establishing training strategies/programmes to enhance understanding of and commitment to compliance policies and procedures,
- overseeing the operation of compliance systems and procedures,
- conducting periodic reviews to monitor the compliance programme’s effectiveness,
- recommending an appropriate executive management oversight structure for the compliance function,
- collaborating with the Corporate Secretary to develop recommendations for collaboration/integration of ethics and compliance initiatives and programmes, and
- partnering with Internal Audit on aligning key compliance initiatives with Air Canada’s Enterprise Risk Management program, as well as helping identify audit priorities and execution and proactively leading remediation and root cause analysis to correct systemic issues.
