Job Description

We are looking for a Commercial Rights and Business Affairs Executive to join the BBC Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA) department, initially in the Radio & Music team.  This is a nine month fixed-term contract role.  The base is flexible, with regular travel to London and to other BBC sites as required.  

CRBA manages and connects the BBC’s Intellectual Property, strategic and business interests through expert negotiation, contracting and commercial deal-making. It is comprised of multiple business teams embedded in Content (including Television, Radio & Music, Children’s & Education, Sport), News, Technology & Product, the Nations, plus a central CRBA team.  The teams share many common business activities key to the commissioning, production and distribution of the BBC’s services and content.  Also, the teams work with the BBC’s professional services including Finance, HR, Legal, Editorial Policy and Strategy.

The CRBA Radio & Music team is a multi-disciplinary team, responsible for the contractual aspects of commissioning and production of programmes and content for the BBC across music television, radio and online, through to commercial exploitation via BBC Studios and third parties.

This is an exciting opportunity at a pivotal time for the BBC. You will be instrumental in helping the BBC to  produce and distribute a world-class audio offering.

Although you may be assigned to a particular CRBA area and workload, from time to time you may be required to work in other areas of CRBA to broaden knowledge, skills and experience.

All CRBA colleagues are ‘agile workers’ and our expectation is that they will work an average of 2-3 day per week in BBC buildings.

Role Responsibility

As Commercial Rights and Business Affairs Executive, you will  work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of experts in rights, commercial, strategy, policy as well as legal professionals to provide accurate, timely, practical and commercially-focused legal, rights and business affairs support the BBC’s in-house audio and music and live events teams with a focus on providing legal support for business development/commercial activity.  It’s an exciting and challenging time and you will be working with stakeholders across the BBC Group and externally.

The Ideal Candidate

In addition to the Job Description, to be successful in this role the following skills, knowledge, qualification and experience are essential:

  • You’ll have demonstrable legal and contractual experience gained working in the production and licensing of broadcast and digital media. 
  • You will bring applied knowledge of some or all of the following areas of law:  intellectual property rights, media, technology, contract and commercial law.
  • You will be familiar with the BBC’s output across music and live events, radio and podcasts on BBC Sounds.  
  • You will have strong legal drafting capabilities to support the negotiation and conclusion of a wide range of agreements in the areas of content audio production, commissioning, co-production and talent engagements, licensing and other commercial agreements, and will understand and be able to apply related BBC policy and strategy.
  • You will have a legal qualification or be in the process of gaining a legal qualification, having at a minimum completed the academic requirements of a University law degree or equivalent (includes completion of CILEX Level 6 academic requirements).
