Job Introduction

BBC Scotland’s Radio Operations is part of the wider Operations and Engineering department providing support and facilities to a diverse range of programme makers. 

The Audio Supervisors within Radio Operations provide specialist audio and technical craft skills working on location and in a range of studios to deliver complex radio and multiplatform productions.

This role is based in Edinburgh. Your primary focus will be working to the production teams based in Edinburgh on recurring daily output. In addition to this you will support our Senior Audio Supervisor in Edinburgh and the Radio team working across BBC Scotland to a wide range of productions for national and network radio output such as Speech & Topical, Music,  Events, Drama, Sport and Entertainment.

Working in a flexible manner with scheduling and client teams you will have the interpersonal skills to work closely with production teams. 

You will work with the Senior Audio Sup in Edinburgh and our Engineering colleagues  to ensure that the Studio and OB facilities in Edinburgh are fit for purpose.

Role Responsibility

  • Assist the Senior Audio Sup on complex output
  • Work as part of the team responsible for the audio operation of a production, providing operational abilities to balance and control the most demanding productions.
  • Technically manage the Studio
  • Plan and organise the technical requirements for non-complex productions, including booking equipment and negotiating with officials and members of the public.
  • Ensure that your work is safe, and presents no hazard to the public: and that all relevant health and safety regulations are applied.
  • Demonstrate craft skills with the ability to train freelance staff where required.
  • Provide advice on technical matters, programme resources and available techniques for production staff
  • Interpret varied artistic and technical requirements, operating a range of equipment to meet changing technical needs.
  • Where appropriate, brief colleagues and production staff on developing technical procedures.
  • Assist in the development of new and efficient ways of working.
  • Represent the BBC/department in operational forums, as well as at production and editorial meetings when appropriate.
  • Act as Senior Audio Supervisor when required.

The Ideal Candidate

You will be experienced in balancing sound for a variety of output ideally for radio,  such as music and speech. You should have worked on outside broadcast and a studio environment. Live music or event experience would be advantageous as would a passion for radio. We are looking for a team player who can also work well on their own. The ideal candidate will have a driving license.
