Job Description

The Nine, and its associated news programmes, is looking for a bold and creative-thinking assistant editor to join our team. You’ll be excited by original journalism, imaginative story-telling, and lively analysis and debate. You’ll be passionate about leading people in a newsroom committed to distinctive programming and a creative and healthy working culture. You’ll also bring a constructively disruptive approach to our programmes that are now well into their third year on-air.

Every week night, on the BBC Scotland channel, we deliver an hour-long TV news programme. We also have shorter bulletins at weekends, produce Seven Days - a weekend discussion show - and a weekly entertainment news offering called The Edit.

We cover the best and most interesting Scottish, UK and international stories, with our audiences, the people of Scotland, at the heart of everything we do, and we want fresh production ideas on the table.

This is a full-time, Glasgow newsroom-based role.

We value the benefit diversity and inclusion brings and we welcome information on any reasonable adjustment we can make to ensure you can fully participate. For example, this may be extra time for a meeting or interview, information in different format or a venue which has wheelchair access. Please contact the resourcing team resourcing@bbc.co.uk and one of our recruiters will be in touch to discuss how we can help.

Role Responsibility

You will have two principle roles. Firstly, to manage our commissioning process and drive our original journalism and future stories towards the Nine and other outlets. Secondly, as one of our most senior figures, you will line-manage and motivate people – including our two-person digital and social media team, our researchers, and other planning staff.

Your ability to work well alongside the wider newsroom, as well as news colleagues elsewhere in the BBC, is of the utmost importance, so you should have experience in managing complex internal and external relationships.

You may also be asked to work in a production role on output, on any given day. And so, you’ll work well under pressure and will be confident in a live news environment – especially the newsroom and the gallery.

As a member of our senior team, you’ll work alongside the three other assistant editors and the editor to help manage and inspire everything we do.

You will help fulfil our desire to maintain a healthy working environment and be committed to the highest standards of editorial discussion, creativity and behaviour.

You will work to the Editor and will be asked to deputise for him on occasion.

You will have strong editorial judgement and a thorough knowledge of the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines including a fundamental commitment to impartiality and diversity of thought.

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll be excited about The Nine and its sister programmes; love TV news; and be committed to being a great leader. You’ll bring energy, ideas, and flair to the role.

You’ll be enthusiastic about leading and encouraging others to bring great stories to air, operate to their best daily, and be motivated to aspire, continually, to a high standard.

You’ll also have experience and evidence of original journalism and be able to demonstrate the desire to find original stories and treatments, and a great attitude.

You’ll have worked in a busy newsroom. You’ll have impeccable news judgement. You should have excellent people and communication skills.

You will have a good knowledge of, and interest in Scottish life, Scotland’s politics, culture, sport, and the wider world.
