Job Introduction

BBC News NI is recruiting an Assistant Editor to the Digital News team. In this post you will lead a team to create and deliver output, driving the news agenda to develop new ways of bringing the news to audiences that would not usually connect with the BBC.

We are looking for an experienced senior journalist with a thorough knowledge of digital formats to join the leadership team, publishing content on the BBC News NI website and our social media channels.

The successful candidate will have; team leadership experience, a reputation for excellent editorial judgement and legal knowledge, a proven track record of bringing in original stories and developing creative treatments, a gift for storytelling and good writing, experience of video production , confidence in handling social media and the ability to inspire and motivate.

Role Responsibility

• Overseeing publication of articles and video to the news website and social media platforms
• Providing creative and editorial guidance to teams working on daily output and off-diary output
• Deputising for the Digital News Editor
• Providing mentoring and formal and informal feedback to team members
• You will assist in the development of an open, collaborative and creative culture within BBC News NI and departments in the newsroom
• You will contribute to planning and executing coverage of major news events such as elections
• Work closely with the senior editorial team in the newsroom
• Deal with legal issues when required
• Work flexibly across output as required, including some Sundays

The Ideal Candidate

 To be successful for this role you will have a track record of original journalism and a sound knowledge of politics, current affairs and ongoing issues in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and further afield.

You should have substantial experience leading daily news teams particularly for daily news websites/outlets. As a team leader you should have a strong track record  providing regular feedback and performance management as well as the ability to absorb feedback

A thorough grounding in media law and a clear understanding of the BBC ‘s Editorial Guidelines is essential as is the ability to work on your own initiative at a high level.
