BBC Northern Ireland's Irish language department, BBC Gaeilge broadcasts around 250 hours of original live and pre-recorded radio content across the year in the evening schedule on BBC Radio Ulster and Radio Foyle. This output is produced by the four-person in-house production team, of which you would be a key member. The flagship radio series, Blas is broadcast live Monday to Thursday at 7pm, Blas Ceoil is broadcast live on Friday evenings at 9.30pm, and Caschlár is live on Saturday evenings from 7-9pm.

We’re a multi-media team, commissioning and producing content for our BBC Gaeilge services on Radio, Digital and Television. This includes new digital assets for language learners, for post-primary exam students, and multi-genre content including vlogs and shortform features. We also commission and broadcast up to 25 hours of originated TV programming produced by the local independent production sector.

Role Responsibility

The aim of the job is to assist the Content Producer in the production of radio programmes in their designated slots in the live schedule. An integral part of the role is to contribute to the development and maintenance of the associated digital platforms. Working as part of a wider multi-media team, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of Irish language output across radio, online and other digital platforms based on a clear understanding of the needs of audiences and commissioners.

As an Assistant Content Producer,  you must be a team player who has a passion for engaging and informing the local audience, coming up with solid programme and story ideas.

You will help the producers set up the programmes by coming up with ideas, researching stories, finding suitable contributors, recording and editing interviews, recording and editing audio and visual content for programme websites and social media platforms, and undertaking administrative duties. You will provide support for live programmes, so you will be expected to coordinate the arrival of guests, process audience correspondence, and make on-air contributions in the form of pre-recorded vox pops or packages, or live reports. You will work across various types of programmes (for example documentaries, factual series and music programming) and your working hours will vary so you will have a flexible approach to working.

The Ideal Candidate

The applicant must have fluency in written and spoken Irish. 

To be successful in this role you will have strong journalistic skills and be comfortable applying lateral thinking to storytelling. You will help to produce consistently creative content whilst working to tight deadlines and under pressure. You will also be a confident user of  social media and appreciate the opportunities to exploit social media for the department, individual programmes and presenters.

You will have an enviable book of contacts and/or be comfortable creating and harnassing this. We want someone who is interested in and enthusiastic about life being lived through Irish, and how the voices of this community can be heard and their stories told with a keen interest in music, sport, arts, topical debate....all kinds of everything. Sometimes our work schedules need to change with little notice to address live output so we need you to be able to work flexibly.

Technically you should have experience using and entering data into systems accurately and experience working on live radio and digital output would be advantageous.
